💡 20-Year Tip: Budget an extra 15–20% for Andaman trips — entry fees to Maya Bay (฿600) and national parks add up fast and aren't included in most tour prices.

🌦️ When to Visit — The Season Guide Nobody Tells You

This is the single biggest factor in whether your island trip is magical or miserable. The Andaman and Gulf coasts have OPPOSITE seasons. Getting this wrong is an expensive mistake.

✅ Peak Season

November → April

Andaman: Best time. Calm seas, sunny, perfect visibility for diving. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead — everything sells out.

Gulf: Good weather too, but this is also the busy period. Expect higher prices and full ferries.

✅ Andaman: GO ✅ Gulf: GO

⚠️ Monsoon Season

May → October

Andaman (Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi): Southwest monsoon hits hard. Rough seas, ferry cancellations, Maya Bay closed most days. Some resorts shut.

Gulf (Koh Samui, Phangan, Tao): This is THEIR dry season — best time for the Gulf coast. Prices 20–30% lower than peak.

❌ Andaman: AVOID ✅ Gulf: GO

🌀 Transition: October

The tricky month

October is the Gulf's monsoon peak — Koh Samui gets its worst storms. Even Koh Tao can see rough seas and ferry cancellations.

If you must travel in October, stick to inland destinations (Chiang Mai, Bangkok) or the far south near Koh Lipe which has a different weather pattern.

⚠️ Andaman: Variable ❌ Gulf: AVOID

💰 Shoulder Season

Late April + October

Late April on the Andaman and early November on the Gulf are sweet spots — weather is acceptable, prices are 15–25% lower, and crowds thin out significantly.

If you're flexible on dates, aiming for shoulder season is the best value strategy for island hopping in 2026.

🌴
Phuket
Andaman Sea
Best for: Families
Budget/day$55–90
Mid-range/day$90–140
Luxury/day$150–300+
Best seasonNov–Apr
🏖️ Beaches 🌐 Infrastructure 🍽️ Food 💸 Pricey
Phuket hit all-time price highs in 2026. Beautiful but expensive and touristy. Best as a base for day trips to Phi Phi and James Bond Island rather than a standalone destination. Patong beach is a party zone — families prefer Kata or Kamala.
🪸
Koh Phi Phi
Andaman Sea
Best for: Snorkelling
Budget/day$45–70
Mid-range/day$75–110
Luxury/day$130–220
Best seasonNov–Apr
🤿 Snorkelling 📸 Scenery 🔊 Noisy Nights 🚗 No Roads
Stunning but crowded. Maya Bay reopened in 2022 but limits visitors to 375 at a time — the entry fee is now ฿600 per person and sells out early. Stay on Phi Phi Don, not just a day trip from Phuket. Tonsai village has great budget guesthouses if you book ahead.
🧗
Krabi / Ao Nang
Andaman Sea
Best for: Rock climbing
Budget/day$40–65
Mid-range/day$65–100
Luxury/day$110–180
Best seasonNov–Apr
💰 Value 🏔️ Climbing ⛴️ Day Trips 🍜 Food
Krabi is consistently the best value on the Andaman coast. Railay Beach is world-famous for limestone climbing. Ao Nang has excellent budget options and serves as a hub for Four Islands tours and Koh Lanta ferries. Less touristy than Phuket with better bang for baht.
🌅
Koh Lanta
Andaman Sea
Best for: Couples
Budget/day$35–55
Mid-range/day$60–90
Luxury/day$100–170

🌅 Sunsets 😌 Relaxed 💰 Value 🌙 Quiet Nights
My personal favourite on the Andaman side. Long Pang beach sunsets are extraordinary, the pace is perfect for couples and it's far less crowded than Phi Phi. Best-value mid-range resorts in the whole region. Closes almost entirely in the low season (May–Oct) though.
🐠
Similan Islands
Andaman Sea (National Park)
Best for: Diving
Day trip from Khao Lak$85–120/pp
Live-aboard dive$250–400/pp
OpenNov–Apr only
Overnight stayLimited (book early)
🤿 Diving 🐠 Marine Life 💸 Day-trip Only 🚢 Far from shore
Arguably the best diving in all of Thailand. The Similan Islands are a protected national park — no hotels, limited overnight camping. Day trips depart from Khao Lak (2 hrs north of Phuket). Only open November to April. A must for serious divers and snorkellers.
🌆
Koh Samui
Gulf of Thailand
Best for: Luxury
Budget/day$45–70
Mid-range/day$75–120
Luxury/day$140–280
Best seasonDec–Aug
🏨 Resorts 🌐 Infrastructure 🍽️ Restaurants 💸 Pricier
Koh Samui has its own airport (USM) — the most accessible island in Thailand. Best luxury resort scene in the Gulf. Chaweng is lively and touristy; Bophut and Maenam beaches are quieter and better value. Perfect base for the Gulf island triangle.
🌕
Koh Phangan
Gulf of Thailand
Best for: Nomads
Budget/day$35–55
Mid-range/day$60–90
Luxury/day$110–180
Best seasonDec–Aug
🧘 Wellness 🌊 Beaches 💻 Digital Nomads 🎉 Full Moon
Koh Phangan transformed from just a Full Moon Party destination into a genuine wellness and digital nomad hub. Thong Nai Pan beach is spectacular and peaceful. Srithanu (north coast) has excellent yoga studios, healthy cafés and a growing nomad community. The party is in Haad Rin — very easy to avoid.
🤿
Koh Tao
Gulf of Thailand
Best for: Diving
Budget/day$30–50
Mid-range/day$55–80
Open Water course$250–350
Best seasonDec–Aug
🤿 Dive School 💰 Cheapest Diving 🌊 Snorkelling 🚢 Long Ferry
World's cheapest place to get PADI certified — period. Open Water courses here cost $250–350 vs $500+ in the Maldives or Europe. Hike to John Suwan rock viewpoint for the best photo in Thailand. The ferry from Chumphon (mainland) takes about 1.5 hours — no flights.
🐘
Koh Chang
Gulf of Thailand (East coast)
Best for: Nature
Budget/day$40–60
Mid-range/day$65–100
Luxury/day$120–200
Best seasonNov–May
🌿 Jungle 🧘 Quiet 💰 Value 📍 Remote
Thailand's second-largest island is criminally underrated. Koh Chang has genuine jungle waterfalls, great diving in a less-visited area, and none of the overcrowding of Samui or Phuket. Closer to Cambodia — many people combine with a Cambodian visa run. White Sand Beach is stunning.
🦈
Koh Lipe
Andaman Sea (Deep South)
Best for: Pristine water
Budget/day$55–80
Mid-range/day$85–130
Luxury/day$150–280
Best seasonNov–Apr
🌊 Water 🤿 Snorkelling 💸 Remote Premium 🚢 Long Journey
Arguably Thailand's most beautiful water — Maldives quality without the price tag (well, it's still pricey for Thailand). The remoteness keeps it less crowded than Phi Phi. Getting here takes effort: ferry from Pak Bara pier or from Langkawi, Malaysia. Worth every bit of the journey in high season.

💡 20-Year Insider Tips for Island Hoppers

Things that will save you money, time and frustration — not in any guidebook.

1

Never book the cheapest ferry on Koh Tao runs

The Gulf of Thailand gets rough. On Koh Tao routes specifically, the cheapest operators use older, slower boats that are miserable in anything other than flat seas. Lomprayah costs a bit more but it's worth every baht.

2

Maya Bay sells out — book entry in advance

The national park now enforces visitor limits. During peak season (Dec–Feb) the ฿600 entry tickets sell out days in advance. Book online at the DNP website before your tour, not the morning of.

3

The night ferry to Samui saves a night's budget

The overnight ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Samui lets you sleep on board — you arrive in the morning having paid ฿350 instead of ฿1,200+ for a hotel room. Not glamorous but very practical for budget travellers.

4

12Go.Asia for all inter-island transport

Book all ferries and buses through 12Go.Asia — they aggregate everything, including real-time availability, and handle the booking reference. Don't show up at piers without a booking in peak season.

5

Check the Full Moon Party calendar before booking

Full Moon Party nights see Koh Phangan accommodation double or triple in price. Everything on the island is fully booked 2–3 weeks ahead. Either plan around it or book very early — and don't be surprised by noise at Haad Rin beach.

6

Stay 1+ weeks on each island, not 2 nights

The "3 islands in 5 days" itinerary is a tourist trap. You spend more on transport, never settle in anywhere and miss the best places that take a few days to discover. Slow down — you'll spend less and enjoy far more.

7

Rent a scooter instead of taxis on larger islands

On Phuket, Samui and Koh Chang, taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging tourists. A scooter rental for ฿200–250/day gives you total freedom and costs less than 2 taxi rides. Get an IDP before you arrive.

8

Island entrance fees add up — budget for them

National park fees are real: Maya Bay ฿600, Ang Thong ฿300, Similan Islands ฿500+. Many tours advertise prices that don't include these. Always ask "does the price include national park entry fees?" before booking.

9

Bring cash to smaller islands

ATMs on Koh Lipe, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta sometimes run out of cash in peak season. Card readers are unreliable on island WiFi. Withdraw extra at your last mainland stop — the ATM fees on small islands are also higher.
