Calculate the real cost of your Thailand island adventure — from Koh Tao diving to Phi Phi day trips. 2026 prices, seasonal advice and insider routes from 20+ years on the ground.
This is the single biggest factor in whether your island trip is magical or miserable. The Andaman and Gulf coasts have OPPOSITE seasons. Getting this wrong is an expensive mistake.
Andaman: Best time. Calm seas, sunny, perfect visibility for diving. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead — everything sells out.
Gulf: Good weather too, but this is also the busy period. Expect higher prices and full ferries.
Andaman (Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi): Southwest monsoon hits hard. Rough seas, ferry cancellations, Maya Bay closed most days. Some resorts shut.
Gulf (Koh Samui, Phangan, Tao): This is THEIR dry season — best time for the Gulf coast. Prices 20–30% lower than peak.
October is the Gulf's monsoon peak — Koh Samui gets its worst storms. Even Koh Tao can see rough seas and ferry cancellations.
If you must travel in October, stick to inland destinations (Chiang Mai, Bangkok) or the far south near Koh Lipe which has a different weather pattern.
Late April on the Andaman and early November on the Gulf are sweet spots — weather is acceptable, prices are 15–25% lower, and crowds thin out significantly.
If you're flexible on dates, aiming for shoulder season is the best value strategy for island hopping in 2026.
Honest assessments — not tourism board fluff. What each island is really like in 2026, who it suits, and what you'll actually spend.
Ferry prices increased 40–60% since 2019. These are real 2026 prices — not what you'll find on outdated booking guides. Always book through 12Go.Asia for the best rates.
Curated picks that are worth the money. I've done every one of these. Book through GetYourGuide or Klook for the best prices and cancellation flexibility.
Maya Bay (entry included), Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave snorkelling. Full day from Phuket or Krabi. Lunch and gear included.
Thailand's finest snorkelling — pristine national park coral. Seasonal tour November to April only. Departs Khao Lak.
Iconic limestone karsts by sea canoe. Floating Muslim village. One of the best full-day experiences in all of Thailand.
Get PADI certified in 3–4 days. Cheapest certification in the world. Best in Asia for beginners — calm, clear water year-round.
Hidden saltwater lake, emerald lagoons and limestone peaks. The original inspiration for The Beach (novel). From Koh Samui or Phangan.
Emerald Cave (swim-through cave to hidden beach), coral reef snorkelling and sunset cocktails. Best experienced from a longtail.
Things that will save you money, time and frustration — not in any guidebook.
The Gulf of Thailand gets rough. On Koh Tao routes specifically, the cheapest operators use older, slower boats that are miserable in anything other than flat seas. Lomprayah costs a bit more but it's worth every baht.
The national park now enforces visitor limits. During peak season (Dec–Feb) the ฿600 entry tickets sell out days in advance. Book online at the DNP website before your tour, not the morning of.
The overnight ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Samui lets you sleep on board — you arrive in the morning having paid ฿350 instead of ฿1,200+ for a hotel room. Not glamorous but very practical for budget travellers.
Book all ferries and buses through 12Go.Asia — they aggregate everything, including real-time availability, and handle the booking reference. Don't show up at piers without a booking in peak season.
Full Moon Party nights see Koh Phangan accommodation double or triple in price. Everything on the island is fully booked 2–3 weeks ahead. Either plan around it or book very early — and don't be surprised by noise at Haad Rin beach.
The "3 islands in 5 days" itinerary is a tourist trap. You spend more on transport, never settle in anywhere and miss the best places that take a few days to discover. Slow down — you'll spend less and enjoy far more.
On Phuket, Samui and Koh Chang, taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging tourists. A scooter rental for ฿200–250/day gives you total freedom and costs less than 2 taxi rides. Get an IDP before you arrive.
National park fees are real: Maya Bay ฿600, Ang Thong ฿300, Similan Islands ฿500+. Many tours advertise prices that don't include these. Always ask "does the price include national park entry fees?" before booking.
ATMs on Koh Lipe, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta sometimes run out of cash in peak season. Card readers are unreliable on island WiFi. Withdraw extra at your last mainland stop — the ATM fees on small islands are also higher.
